Leadership

The nature of the board demands leadership. Board members are leaders in the community and in the district. They take the insight and expertise of the other district leaders and make decisions based on a singular premise, what is best for the students. What is best for students also takes into account what is best for teachers, and the community. Opportunity for students usually comes with a cost for the community. Those sometimes competing ideals need to be balanced. Furthermore, a board demands collaboration. A good board is made up of varied thought leaders that must work together toward solutions. I have the experience of working with board members with extremely differing viewpoints to help achieve the excellent outcomes demanded by our district.

Being president of the board has been described as a “leader among equals.” The president has no more say than any other member, but is elected by his or her peers to run meetings, meet regularly with the superintendent, be the point person with legal counsel and disseminate information. Each board elects leadership that they feel can best serve the district. I have been honored and humbled to be elected unanimously by my peers to be president 5 years and vice president 3 years, meaning I’ve been selected into a leadership position for the majority of time I’ve served.

I’ve also served the medical community as Chairman of the Department of Surgery at St. Elizabeth, and on both the Medical Executive Board and our corporate board at OrthoCincy. I also serve as Chair of the Orthopaedic Institute at St. Elizabeth. In the time that I have served, OrthoCincy has grown from a 15 million dollar company to a 50 million dollar company; the Orthopaedic Service line at St. Elizabeth has increased 3 fold.
